New
York Times (1851-) The Times did not
provide the best local news coverage, but it is digitized. The best way to
access articles is by using the New York Times Historical database, available
through the library’s web site.
New York
Tribune (1841-1865) The Tribune, like the Times, sought a respectable,
middle-class readership. The Culpeper Media Library on the third floor of Babbidge has 25 years of the Tribune on microfilm.
New York
World (1882-1929). This major daily newspaper was founded in 1860, but gained much
greater significance after it was purchased in 1883 by Joseph Pulitzer. It
became a lively, often sensational paper that reached a working-class
readership, and it engaged in circulation wars with William Randolph Hearst’s New
York Journal around the turn of the century. The term “yellow journalism”
was first applied to these two newspapers. UConn has
only the “semiweekly edition” that came out on Tuesday and Friday. You will
find more colorful local news here than in the Times, but there is no index to
help you find it. It is available on microfilm in the Culpeper room on the
third floor of the library.
