Location/Description
The Tech Quad Neighborhood is bounded by Glenbrook Road to
the south, Hillside Road to the west, North Eagleville Road to the north
and Swan Lake to the east.
Primary
Intention
The primary intent is to provide a sense of cohesion among
disparate architectural styles, relating new construction to existing
proximate buildings and defining outdoor spaces that reinforce the Master
Plan. Connections (physical and visual) to other buildings and
to the primary path system should be given particular attention.
Site
and Architectural Guidelines
The Tech quad is an assortment of architectural styles and
massing. The most important aspect of new architecture will be
to establish a unifying presence and a central organizational open space
intended to provide a humane scale and identity within a dense configuration
of buildings.
- The North/South Cross-Axial Path will require special detailing
as it weaves through this neighborhood and closely engages with
the adjacent architecture. The standard dimensional modules
and placement of furnishing may need to be varied in order to maintain
the pathway's continuity while working within the tight existing
conditions.
- The pathway's entrance off North Eagleville Road, between the
Life Sciences and Bio/Physics buildings, should be as wide and welcoming
as possible. Directional signs will be crucial to establishing
a clear understandable "trail-head." Lighting will need to
address the psychological implications presented by the narrow confines
and hidden view corridors from adjacent streets.
- The pathway's crossing of North Eagleville Road must be very noticeable
and safe. On-street parking should be eliminated at the crossing
area to maintain good sight lines for pedestrians and vehicles.
The University will need to monitor conflicts and consider
adding a signalized crossing favoring the pedestrian right-of-way.
- The proposed addition to the Life Sciences Building will need
to provide an appropriate axial and visual terminus to the North/South
Cross-Axial Path from the south. Due to the convergence of
multiple pathways, the open space in front of this addition will
favor a plaza with ample pavement. The Tech Quad Plaza and
the South Dormitory Courtyard act as "anchors" on either end of
the North/South Cross-Axial Path with the Forum at the center.
- Consistent design of the North/South Cross-Axial Path (ground
plane and site furnishings) will provide a powerful campus-wide
expression of continuity, especially amongst strong architectural
diversity.
- Building site U-8 should not exceed six stories in height with
its primary entrance to the northwest facing both the North/South
Cross-Axial Path and east-west path leading to the parking garage.
- Building site U-10 should not exceed four stories due to its adjacency
with the Life Sciences Building.
- The neighborhood's landscape image needs considerable improvement
to soften the high building density, screen views and provide a
higher quality image consistent with the remainder of campus.
- Service to buildings must be from the neighborhood's perimeter
with the central open space reserved for pedestrians.
