South Campus
Map South Campus

Location/Description

This neighborhood is defined by Bolton Road and the edge of campus to the south and west, by Gilbert Road to the north and Route 195 to the east.
Primary Intention

The primary intention is to reinforce the distinct character of the South Campus Residences and Arts Campus and maintain coherent expression in any additions or renovations to the Alumni Quad Residences.
Site and Architectural Guidelines

  • The architectural expression of the South Campus Residences should be followed in any subsequent adjacent construction.  The proposed future buildings are planned to contain the central organizing open space while maintaining a view corridor to Mirror Lake.
  • With the new additions to the Arts Campus, the buildings are linked programmatically while remaining architecturally diverse.  New construction could relate either to the existing Art Building or continue in the spirit of a more eclectic style.  Most importantly, there is an opportunity to create a strong open space structure around which the buildings can be organized and unified.  Artwork should be incorporated within the landscape.
  • The standard campus brick should be used on all new construction, particularly the building close to the entrance to campus on Mansfield Road off Route 195.
