Eriospermums are tuberous plants native to southern Africa, especially the arid winter-rainfall regions of South Africa. Though little known beyond specialists in the biology of South African geophytes, the genus presents a fascinating subject for growers of succulent plants and tender bulbs. The ecology, systematics, and morphology of Eriospermum are poorly understood, and have a number of unique aspects worthy of serious research. This article provides a brief overview of the strange world of eriospermums.
