Excerpts from "The Draft Yesterday," New York Times, Aug. 25, 1863
The drafting in the Fourth District passed off quietly yesterday, there being not an approach even to any demonstration of dissatisfaction. Inspector DILKS had charge of the Police, and a body of military was posted in the building. Provost-Marshal ERHARDT had made excellent arrangements, and with his assistants hurried the drawings rapidly along. Mr. B. LEVISON, and blind man -- a Prussian who has been blind five years -- drew the names from the wheel. The first name drawn was that of PATRICK MAGUIRE, Pier No. 1, North River. The following is the result. The Fourth Ward has been completed. The Fifth will be commenced this morning at 9 o'clock........
[The article lists the names of the draftees by ward. The original article provides the lists for Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The following excerpt is the complete list for the Fourth Ward only. It includes the names of 402 men. Because of the poor quality of the microfilm reproduction, not all the names were legible. -- ed. 10/13/2005]
