Course Objectives
To study the social, cultural, economic, and spatial changes that American cities underwent in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The course is also intended to help students improve their skills in reading historical sources and writing essays.
Assignments and Grading

As students have different learning styles and abilities, I will adjust the course grades to give the greatest weight to each student's areas of strength. I will calculate grades in whatever way is most advantageous to each student, as follows:

Option 1: Writing counts 65%
Option 2: Writing counts 50%
Option 3: Writing counts 35%
Essay: 15%
Essay: 15%
Essay: 10%
Best book review: 20%
Best book review: 20%
Best book review: 15%
Second best book review: 15%
Second best book review: 15%
Second best book review: 10%
Other book review: 15%
Best two quizzes: 10%
Best four quizzes: 20%
Best six quizzes: 30%
Final exam: 25%
Final exam: 30%
Final exam: 35%

Students may write either two or three book reviews, and as many of the quizzes as they wish. Only the best ones will be counted. There will be no paper assignments beyond those listed on the syllabus. There will be no make-up quizzes under any circumstances, including deaths in the family, hospitalization, incarceration or alien abduction; there will, however, be at least one "pop quiz" during the semester which may take the place of any of the regular quizzes.

Format of Tests
  • The quizzes will consist of short-answer questions and either a "long identification" question or a brief essay interpreting a short primary source. The long identification questions will ask you to identify a term and discuss its significance in American urban history. The quizzes will typically take about 20-25 minutes.
  • The final examination will include some or all of the usual components of the quizzes, along with two longer essays. These essays will each draw on a range of material presented in the lectures, textbook, and assigned readings. You will be allowed two hours to complete the exam.
Required Reading
  • Chudacoff and Baldwin ["C&B"], Major Problems in American Urban and Suburban History, 2nd ed.
  • Johnson, Sam Patch
  • Nasaw, Children of the City
  • Johns, Moment of Grace

Ground Rules

Here is the policy on academic integrity in the University of Connecticut's student code:

"A fundamental tenet of all educational institutions is academic honesty; academic work depends upon respect for and acknowledgement of the research and ideas of others. Misrepresenting someone else's work as one's own is a serious offense in any academic setting and it will not be condoned. Academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to, providing or receiving assistance in a manner not authorized by the instructor in the creation of work to be submitted for academic evaluation (e.g. papers, projects, and examinations); any attempt to influence improperly (e.g. bribery, threats) any member of the faculty, staff, or administration of the University in any matter pertaining to academics or research; presenting, as one's own, the ideas or words of another for academic evaluation; doing unauthorized academic work for which another person will receive credit or be evaluated; and presenting the same or substantially the same papers or projects in two or more courses without the explicit permission of the instructors involved. A student who knowingly assists another student in committing an act of academic misconduct shall be equally accountable for the violation, and shall be subject to the sanctions and other remedies described in The Student Code."

Class Schedule

Students should read each assignment before the scheduled date, so that we may discuss it in class. A system of abbreviation is used to indicate readings from the textbook: "C&B, Essay 1.2" means Chudacoff and Baldwin, Major Problems in American Urban and Suburban History, Chapter 1, Essay 2 (the essay by Pollan).
