Images of the Fourth Ward Today

In this (somewhat dated) aerial view of Manhattan, the Fourth Ward area is at the lower right. The neighborhood is now split in two by the approaches to the Brooklyn Bridge, the southernmost bridge on the East River.  Extensive redevelopment has thoroughly rearranged the street system and has destroyed most of the buildings that were present in the 1860s. Small pockets of nineteenth-century buildings remain in the far northern and southern corners of the district.
A view south on Pearl Street from the Brooklyn Bridge. The financial district looms over the neighborhood. One of the few remaining blocks of nineteenth century architecture. Water Street, looking north toward the bridge.
