Effective April 17, 2000, the Computing Services Department, within the University Computer Center, ceased to exist as a single entity, due to an organizational restructuring. The five groups listed below have been realigned into an interim structure.

The central site, located on the ground floor of the Math Sciences Building in the Gant Science Complex, houses the servers and other large-scale hardware, computer labs, production facilities, and staff office space. (Click on public areas for a quick peek.) Computing Services divided into five (5) programs, each supervised by a manager, as described below.

Computing Services Components

  • The Help Desk offers a first point of contact for the University community seeking information, computer and PPP accounts, help on computing and networking problems, documentation, training, and tours.

  • Computer Consulting and Support Services manages the Computer Center's general access personal computing labs, advises University offices about automation needs and plans, provides support for distributed servers, workstations, and printers, consults with students, faculty, and staff about personal computer and mainframe applications, and provides technical support for the University's UConnWeb and Virtual Classroom.

  • Production Control schedules, monitors and troubleshoots problems with the administrative batch systems; provides data entry for transcribing paper records into electronic form; operates the bubble scanner and Departmental copiers; and delivers administrative printouts.

  • Computer Operations manages the central computing complex (including central servers, printers, and tape library) seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

  • Server Support provides technical support for the central servers, including the mainframes.
