UCC Enterprise Servers

9672-R63

The IBM S/390 9672-R63 Parallel Enterprise Server is a 6-way CMOS (6 Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor microprocessors) large scale computing server with 1 GB of central storage. Each CMOS microprocessor is rated at 20 MIPS with a combined relative processor speed rated at 118 MIPS. The IBM S/390 9672-R63 Parallel Enterprise Server provides a wide range of computing capacity for enabling S/390, Client/Server and Open Applications. It is designed with S/390 architecture to function with outstanding availability and environmental characteristics. VM/ESA is the main operating system on this server.

The OS/390 operating system runs as a guest operating system under VM/ESA on the S/390 9672-R63 Parallel Enterprise Server. OS/390 is used to execute large programs which use many processing resources, including CPU, memory, tape drives, etc. All programs for execution under OS/390 are sent from VM/ESA.

Multiprise 2003-246

The IBM S/390 Multiprise 2003-246 is a 4-way CMOS (4 Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor microprocessors) large scale computing server with 2 GB of central storage. Each CMOS microprocessor is rated at 32 MIPS with a combined relative processor speed rated at 125 MIPS. The IBM S/390 Multiprise 2003 Enterprise Server, IBM newest line of computing servers, provides a wide range of computing capacity for enabling S/390, Client/Server and Open Applications. It is designed with S/390 architecture to function with outstanding availability and environmental characteristics. VM/ESA is the main operating system on this server. The Multiprise server runs under the VM/ESA operating system, with CMS (Conversational Monitoring System) providing interactive logon access for all users. CMS can be used to create, modify, and erase files; run programs interactively; communicate to other users; and communicate with other systems via network connections.

Combined Enterprise Server Processor Capability

The S/390 9672-R63 Parallel Enterprise Server and the Multiprise 2003-246 server position the University to migrate to higher channel speeds and greater distances for remote devices by utilizing fiber optic channel capability. OSA (Open Systems Adapter) options on both servers provide for direct industry standard connection to Ethernet, Token Ring and FDDI LANS (Local Area Networks). Most importantly, the S/390 9672-R63 Parallel Enterprise Server positions the university in the evolving Open large scale client server arena. The combination of both processors position the University in the higher echelon of educational institutions executing research on large IBM mainframe computers.
