Toll-Free ASCII Dial Service/PPP Offering

Date: March 12, 1997

As a follow up to DDD00045 (August 6, 1996), I want to provide a status of the Point-to-Point protocol (PPP) project and to remind the community of the phasing out of ASCII dial service.

PPP service to all regional campus locations and to Bethel, Brooklyn, Haddam and North Haven is available and operational. To obtain a PPP account, you may apply and pay for this service at the Computer Center Help Desk (M001).

In response to customer comments, we have left toll-free (1-800) ASCII service in place longer than anticipated to provide additional time to migrate to PPP service. We have installed some ASCII ports at each regional campus to continue to provide this service, but we must now begin to eliminate the toll-free access. Beginning March 24, 1997, the number of toll free-lines will be reduced from fifteen (15) to ten (10). On April 21, 1997, the ten (10) lines will be reduced to five (5), and on May 19, 1997, the toll free access will be eliminated entirely. Please remember, ASCII service is still available on a local-dial or toll basis at each regional campus and at Storrs.

The ASCII dial numbers are as follows:

Storrs(860) 486-9901
Avery Point(860) 405-9297
Hartford(860) 570-5371
Stamford(203) 461-6798
Torrington(860) 626-6829
Waterbury(203) 596-8801

If you have any questions or need assistance, please call the University Computer Center Help Desk at (860) 486-4357.
