Enterprise Server Software Changes

Date: August 12, 1997

Reformatted: August 15, 1997

On August 18, 1997, the following software changes will occur on the IBM Enterprise Servers. The upgrades installed on the listed program products bring these packages into Year 2000 compliance.

As part of the 1997 Information Technology Plan, the Software Server will roll over into production on August 18th. The software server provides a simplified process of locating and downloading University licenses and other "shareware" packages useful for the microcomputer (Macintosh and PC) and UNIX platforms. This collection consolidates software that was previously available through the Computer Center Help Desk, IBM HESC, selected shareware sites, and the University FTP server (located at FTP.UCONN.EDU).

Enhancements to the site include a web interface, (http://FTP.UCONN.EDU) and a new directory structure. Refer to the aforementioned web page for details.

This will be the primary distribution point for all Computer Center distributed software.

The contents of the site prior to August 18th will be available at FTP://FTP.UCONN.EDU/OLDFTP.

Please forward your questions and comments to HELPDESK@UCONNVM.UCONN.EDU or phone (860) 486-4357.

On September 3, 1997, a new option will appear on the VTAM LOGON Screen. The option, "M" will allow access to the second processor (B-side), using a technique called Cross System Extension (CSE). The implementation of CSE allows load balancing across these two enterprise servers. For additional information, type: NEWS.

On July 1, 1998, the following software will be removed from the Enterprise Servers. If you are still using any of these software packages, you are urged to contact the Computer Center Help Desk at 486-4357. They, in turn, will put you in touch with a consultant to recommend alternate resources.

On July 1, 1999, the following software will be removed from the Enterprise Servers. The software is old and not supported by the respective vendors. In addition, the software listed is not Year 2000 compliant. If you are still using any of these software packages, you are urged to contact the Computer Center Help Desk at 486-4357. Again, they will put you in touch with a consultant to recommend alternate resources.
