PACX/Series 1 Service Discontinuation

Date: April 21, 1998

Reformatted: April 21, 1998

The Computer Center must finally eliminate ASCII 3270 emulation utilizing PACX/Series 1 hardware. The support of enterprise server (mainframe) access via these Yale/ASCII gateway systems will be terminated on July 1, 1998.

Any connections to the Computer Center's enterprise server using ASCII-based 3270 emulation packages like YTERM, TINCAN, or others will be discontinued. The Computer Center can no longer support the YTERM and TINCAN programs since Yale University, the creator of these programs, has long since dropped all support or upgrades. This announcement was previously distributed in DDD00036 dated 12/27/95. This change will also affect printers serially connected to the enterprise server. There will be NO change to any I.P.-based communication packages (i.e., TN3270).

This elimination of service must occur because none of the hardware or software that provides this emulation is supported by anyone. Additionally, the hardware is over 15 years old, and we have exhausted our supply of spare parts. The Computer Center has been contacting users known to have these connections to arrange alternative and more modern means of enterprise server connection.

If you or your department is using a PC or ASCII terminal to connect to the enterprise server via a serial line connection, also known as a PACX connection, or using YTERM or TINCAN terminal emulation programs, please contact Kathie Sorrentino (486-1437) of UCC Computer Consulting & Support Services as soon as possible.

As usual, this communication and other informational mailings to Deans, Directors, and Department Heads are viewable on the Computer Center Policies web page at the following address:
