INFORMATIONAL ITEM: Proxy Services Implementation

December 23, 1998

ATTENTION: Deans, Directors, Department Heads, and Other Interested Parties

For several years, access to certain University web-based resources had to be restricted by IP domain. That is, only users accessing these resources from the UConn domain (137.99.*.*) would be granted legitimate access. This restriction was necessary because of either contractual/licensing issues or security reasons. These resources included certain Library databases and electronic journals, and certain UConn servers such as the Software Distribution Server and the Documentation Server.

As of December 1998, production Proxy Services have been implemented to address this restriction for authenticated users requiring legitimate access to these resources from the Internet.

To use Proxy Services, any UConn student, faculty, or staff member must:

  1. apply for a Proxy Account,
  2. correctly configure their browser, and
  3. connect to the Internet from their Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Instructions for obtaining a Proxy Account and for configuring the browser can be obtained from the following UCC Help Desk website:

http://www.sp.uconn.edu/~wwwtcp/proxy/html/proxacct.html

If necessary, call the Help Desk (486-HELP) for assistance.

This communication and other informational mailings to Deans, Directors, and Department Heads are accessible from the Computer Center "Policies" web page at the following address:
