Mainframe Hardware / Software Changes

Date: October 31, 1995

ATTENTION: Deans, Directors, Department Heads, and Other Interested Parties

The following major changes will be taking place on the mainframe computer system at the University Computer Center. Please see the actual or approximate dates of changes below.

Hardware:

The ES-9000 system will be replaced by a new CMOS-based 9672 processor around the first week of January 1996. While there will be a significant gain in performance with this replacement, the vector facility available with the current ES-9000 will no longer be available. Current users of vector facilities please note: you may need to make modifications to your programs or the manner in which they are invoked. All software that currently supports the vector hardware will be reinstalled or modified to run in scalar mode by December 1, 1995.

It is also planned to add an SP2 9076 cluster/complex which is intended to provide central general UNIX support for the University community. More information will be forthcoming regarding this emerging UNIX program.

Operating Systems Software:

On December 26, 1995, VM/ESA 1.2.2 and CMS 11 will be the default VM/CMS operating systems. We are currently running VM/ESA 1.1.1 and CMS 8. General users will be able to access CMS 11 (but not VM/ESA 1.2.2) starting with November 6 by issuing the command:
IPL CMS11

They can revert to CMS 8 by entering:
IPL CMS

If you have questions or concerns, please contact the staff members of UCC Instructional and Research Services listed below. Vector users, in particular, are urged to do so.
