Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) Offering
Date: August 6, 1996
ATTENTION: Vice Presidents, Deans, Directors, Department Heads,
and Other Interested Parties
Last year, and again this past Spring, response to
Computer Center-initated surveys
indicated a strong desire in the University community for expanded PPP
services and a willingness to pay for these services.
PPP service provides graphical, remote access (dial-up) to
the University network, central mainframe, and the Internet. Based on
these requests, the Computer Center plans
to expand current PPP services beginning in September, 1996.
PPP Access Offering:
The existing PPP modem pool at the
Storrs campus will be expanded, and
additional pools will be installed at all regional campuses and at
selected Co-Operative Extension offices. Service will be expanded
incrementally: local call access will be available to the regional
campuses around September 1st; local call access to the Co-Operative
Extension offices will be added as quickly as possible in September;
additional sites and/or equipment will be added as demand increases.
Once the initial upgrades are accomplished,
almost all of the towns within Connecticut will have
access to PPP service with a local telephone call.
-
Eligibility: PPP access to the University network and
the Internet will be offered to all faculty, staff, and students
of the University on a for-fee basis.
-
Anticipated Charges:
- $25.00 one-time set-up fee.
- $12.00 per month for 100 hours of access time.
- $ 2.00 per hour for usage beyond the 100-hour limit.
-
PPP Accounts:
- Accounts will be renewed on an annual
basis (expiration date of Oct. 31st).
- Existing accounts will remain
open with the new rate applied as of Oct. 31st.
- Administration and
procedures for this service will be similar to our current PPP process.
-
Modem pool location and sizing will be based on PPP account holders'
common calling location. It is
important for you to sign-up early
so we have the best opportunity to locate and size this service
correctly.
Details about exact pricing,
procedures for sign-up, etc., will be published within the next two
weeks.
ASCII Dial Service: A related
project involves the phasing out of our ASCII dial service. This
service, initially created for access to the IBM host, uses old software
and hardware. The plan is to phase it out in favor of PPP. This Fall,
we will limit the 1-800 access to Computer Center
hosts, reduce the number of 1-800
lines, and distribute some ASCII dial service to each regional campus.
It is our goal to remove all 1-800 service and all ASCII service by the
Fall of 1997.
